초록
The aim of this paper is to study on the relation between ethical concepts like virtue and passion through the investigation of the problem of weakness of will that Descartes suggested. Descartes who has the strong soul asserts that we can control our passions. But we can’t conclude in haste that he deny the conflict between the intellect and the will in actual life. In Descartes’s moral theory, Generosity as a virtue is “the key to all the other virtues and a general remedy for every disorder of the passions.” The generosity is restricted to the worthful action originated from the knowledge on the good and the evil. Therefore the Generosity sets the rational limit on will. The generous person who has that knowledge has complete command over his passions. This condition makes a moral activist realize the agreement between nature and habit and between will and reason. This agreement is the highest goal in Descartes’s moral philosophy.
