본 논문은 데카르트가 「멜랑에게 1644년 5월 2일에 보낸 편지」, 「멜랑에게 1645년 2월 9일에 보낸 편지」 그리고 「4성찰」을 중심으로 데카르트의 자유의지에 대한 사상을 살펴본다. 데카르트가 「4성찰」에서 자유의지에 대해 내리는 정의에서 볼 수 있듯이 그는 자유의지를 두 가지 측면에서 이해한다. 한쪽에는 명증한 것에 자발적으로 순응하는 자발성의 자유가 있고, 다른 쪽에는 여러 개의 것 중에 임의적으로 선택할 수 있는 양자택일의 자유가 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 자유의 두 측면의 관계를 살펴보고, 양자택일의 자유가 데카르트에게서 계속 평가절하되는 것처럼 보임에도 자유의지를 정의함에 있어서 갖는 본질적인 지위를 설명하고자 한다. 이 과정에서 데카르트 자유의지와 관련해서 주석가들이 제시한 다양한 입장을 본 논문에서 살펴볼 것이다. 급진 자유의지주의, 양립가능론, 온건 자유의지주의의 해석이 검토될 것이고, 우리는 인간의 시간성과 주의력을 핵심으로 하는 온건 자유의지주의 해석을 지지할 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 오직 시간성과 주의만을 통해서 자유의지를 설명하는 것은 불충분하다는 것을 살펴본 다음, 우리는 인간의 신체적 차원과 자유의지의 관계를 검토할 것이다. 그리하여 마지막으로 인간의 자유의지가 신체를 결합된 영혼의 ‘결의’로서 이해되어야 한다는 것을 주장할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to examine Descartes' thoughts on free will, focusing on his letters to Mesland dated May 2, 1644, and February 9, 1645, as well as the Fourth Meditation. As we can see in the definition of free will in the Fourth Meditation, Descartes' concept of free will has two parts. On one side, there is the freedom of spontaneity, by which our will conforms itself to what is evident, and on the other, there is the freedom of choice between contraries(two-way power), by which our will can choose by itself one thing among several options. This paper will explore the relationship between these two aspects of freedom and explain the critical importance of the freedom of two-way power in defining free will, despite its seemingly constant devaluation by Descartes and his commentators. In this process, the paper will review diverse interpretations regarding Descartes' free will. So, radical libertarianism, compatibilism, and moderate libertarianism will be examined, and we will support the moderate libertarianism which focuses on human temporality and attention. Nevertheless, we will argue that it is insufficient to explain free will solely through temporality and attention, and we must consider the human body and the human desires(inclinations) to explain human free will. Finally, we will argue that the independence of human free will stood upon the resolution of the embodied soul.
