Abstract
Recently, a body of literature concerning Confucian ethics emerges in relation to virtue ethics. Virtue ethics is translated in Chinese as "ethics of virtuous nature" and as "ethics of virtous action"; interestingly, two terms are used freely, without much distinction. I conjecture it is due to the peculiar character of Confucianism, especially that of Neo-Confucianism, that having a virtuous nature almost guarantees that there follows virtous actions. On the other hand, not all Confucian scholars emphasize one's inborn, virtuous 'nature.' Tasan Chong Yag-yong makes it clear that inside human mind, there is no natural virtuous nature in human mind, but only a tendency or inclination that prefers goodness over evil. Even more, quiet cultivation of one's inner mind gets in the way of actually performing the moral goodness. In other words,Tasan's ethical position is that of practical one, giving priorities to 'doing'(virtuous action) instead of 'being'(virtous nature), which sounds just the opposite of what many ethicists claims virtue ethics to be. It has to be pointed out, nonetheless, that Tasan's theories have never overlooked the virtue and stressed only the general rules for action. His notion of 'doing'is the one that, when performed in a consistent manner, eventually shapes the agent's 'being.' In this sense, Tasan's ethical perspective can be said to fall somewhere between the traditional virtue ethics and the present ethics of duty.
