Abstract

This article examines how orators use human nature as a tool of persuasion in the so-called Mytilene debates in Thucydides' History 3.36-45. In this debate over the handling of the Mytilenean revolt of 428 BCE, Cleon, a hard-line advocate, and Diodotus, a moderate, each appeals to human nature to persuade Athenians. Cleon argues that the revolt was not merely a mistake(hamartia), but a deliberate and premeditated crime(adikia) that warrants harsh punishment. He also emphasizes the Mytileneans' arrogance in belittling the Athenians, thereby provoking their anger. In contrast, Diodotus highlights the fallibility of human nature and argues that harsh punishments are not only ineffective in deterring future rebellions but may even backfire. He persuades the Athenians to adopt a more lenient approach. This debate serves as a compelling example of how human nature is used in Rhetorical strategies. Both orators rely on conceptions of human nature to shape their arguments and appeal to the emotions and reasoning of their audiences.
