Abstract
Anthropocene is the name of a new geological era proposed to reflect the phenomenon that human scientific, industrial, and economic activities leave indelible traces on Earth. Anthropocene has been a scientific concept, a new worldview and a paradigm for knowledge production, pursuing a new convergent approach to the Earth and humans, and has played a leading role in relational turn, academically calling for fundamental revision on human-centered social science research and modernity itself. Although it originally started in the field of natural science, it is emerging as a paradigm of "disaster response" to diagnose and overcome the Earth's crisis in various fields such as humanities, social sciences, and arts. In this paper, I would like to question the meaning of resilience that is necessary for disaster response from the perspective of the island that is emerging as an important sign and site of the anthropological crisis. In modernist thinking, the island has been understood to be isolated, backward, dependent, and vulnerable, but in the prospective of the Anthropocene Island, the island is viewed as a space for alternative thinking and practice. This paper seeks to find a clue to overcome the Anthropocene crisis through this new approach to the island.
