Abstract

Based on Julia Kristeva’s intertextuality theory, this paper explores Pai Hsien-yung’s short story “Lonely Flower 孤戀花” and its 1985 film adaptation directed by Lin Qingjie. The transformation and re-creation of narrative and audio-visual language analyzes the intertextual relationship between the two and the significance of literature and film in cross-media communication. The novel reveals the survival dilemma and tragic fate of lower-class women in a patriarchal society, while the film deepens the theme of the novel through the combination of images, light, color and music, and deepens the original work by localizing the historical background. criticality. At the same time, the use of color, light, shadow and music in the film not only conveys the emotions of the novel text, but also enhances the audience’s emotional resonance and immersive experience. Through the intertextual analysis of films and novels, this study further demonstrates the communication between literature and film in social criticism and aesthetic expression, and reflects the reconstruction of text symbols and the extension of meaning in the process of cross-media adaptation.
