本研究は、瀬戸内海島嶼および沿岸における言語地理学的な方言調査の結果について、GIS(地理情報システムArcGIS)という新たな空間情報解析ツールを用いて分析するものである。本研究の具体的な取り組みは、『瀬戸内海言語図巻上・下巻』の追跡調査を行うことで当時の研究成果との比較を行い、GISによって、時間的推移による「実時間」上における言語変化の実態を明らかにすることである。GISは、言語伝播に関与する複雑な要因の解明と、言語変化のメカニズムをさらに詳しく解析できる可能性を秘めている。日本語諸方言の過去・現在・未来を論じる上で、地理空間情報システム技術を用いた言語地理学的研究は、今後、重要な意味を持つと考える。
Abstract
In this study, I have analyzed the results of the survey on the dialects around the Seto Inland Sea using the Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS is a new tool for analyzing information scientifically in terms of time and space. The purpose of this study was to compare data from Linguistic Atlas of Seto Inland Sea (Yoichi, 1974) and data collected for this study using the GIS and to clarify how the dialects in these areas have changed over time. Data analysis has found a change in the geographical range of dialects in this area, as well as details about the geographical range of the dialects; for instance, the influence of TV on the spread of the standard Japanese dialect to other areas. Also, by using GIS, more about the way of this change or evolution of the language was discovered. Studying the evolution of languages from the past to the present using geographical information (i.e., GIS) is extremely important in showing how languages have changed and evolved.
