Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of career support at the major level, as perceived by university students, on career barriers, and to examine the individual mediating effects and sequential mediating effects of future time perspective and grit in the relationship between these two variables. To this end, a survey was conducted with 430 undergraduate students from a four-year private university in Seoul. Basic statistics and direct and indirect effects among key variables were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and the PROCESS Macro(model 6). The results revealed the following: First, major-based career support significantly increased future time perspective and grit, showing a signigicant direct effect on reducing career barriers. Second, future time perspective and grit each showed independent mediating effects in the relationship between career support and career barriers. Furthermore, a sequential mediating effect was statistically significant, in which future time perspective strengthened grit, thereby mitigating career barriers. These findings suggest that career barriers are not shaped solely by external conditions but are also influenced by students’ cognitive and motivational resources related to how they perceive their future and sustain long-term goal pursuit. This study contributes to the literature by highlighting major-based career support as a critical contextual factor in alleviating students’ career barriers and by identifying an integrated psychological mechanism involving future time perspective and grit. Practical implications include the need for major-specific career guidance, future-oriented career education, and programs designed to strengthen grit among university students.
