Abstract
Previous studies on keyhole-shaped tombs distributed across the Korean Peninsula have primarily focused on identifying the characteristics of the interred individuals and the background of tomb construction by analyzing the diversity in tomb structures and artifacts. Such diversity is the result of actions carried out by various agents. Therefore, not only the structural aspects but also the procedural and ritualistic aspects-such as the burial process and funerary rites-should be considered in tandem. Based on this awareness, this article focuses on Sindok Tomb No.1 in Hampyeong, which retains abundant information on the burial process, with the aim of reconstructing the burial process and further identifying the nature of the interred individuals. The burial process of Sindok Tomb No.1 can be divided into several stages: preparation of the burial space, placement of the remains and grave goods, sealing of the burial chamber, and ritual offerings of food. While the tomb’s burial facility originates from Norther Kyushu-style stone chamber, aspects such as the use of a wooden coffin with attached handles, the construction of a coffin stand, and the parallel alignment of the deceased to the tomb’s longitudinal axis reflect strong influence from Baekje central area. Inconsistencies arising from the duality between tomb structure and funerary customs may have led to the use of a transport-style coffin in ways differing from original methods. In regard to the identity of the tomb occupant, this study argues that attempting to classify their origin or ethnicity through a dichotomous framework of either the Korean Peninsula or the Japanese Archipelago is unproductive. Instead, the grave goods are approached as material traces selectively representing some of the diverse social relationships the deceased maintained during life and after death. The burial facilities and process of Sindok Tomb No.1, which follow Baekje central norms, reflect the spiritual orientation and views of the afterlife held by the interred individual of tomb construction group. The grave goods originate from various sources-including local production, Baekje central areas, and the Japanese Archipelago-suggesting the participation of multiple groups in the funeral and highlighting the deceased’s broad social network and elevated social status.
