상상된 문화 “스크린”으로서의 이순신 서사읽기— 영화 <명량>과 세월호 참사 보도의 비교 분석을 중심으로

본 연구는 영화 <명량>의 괄목할 만한 흥행 성적이 한국 사회가 봉착했던 위기 상황인 세월호 참사와 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 이해한다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 <명량>의 인기는 한국 사회의 위기 상황에 대한 사람들의 방어 메커니즘이 작동한 결과라는 가설에 초점을 맞추고이를 살펴본다. 본 연구는 문화기억과 미디어의 관계에 대한 이론들을참조하는데, 특히 마리타 스터큰(Marita Sturken)이 제시한 “은폐기억” 에 대한 이론을 차용하고 이를 바탕으로 <명량>의 영상이 세월호 참사로 인한 한국 사회의 문화적 상흔을 봉합하는 방식에 대해 살펴본다. 보다 구체적으로 본 연구는 세월호 참사 보도 서사와 영상 전략의 특징을 분석하고 이를 통해 한국 사회에서 세월호에 대한 문화기억이 어떻게 구축되어 왔는가를 살펴본다. 분석에서 보여지듯 세월호 참사 보도는 한국 사회 시스템들의 총체적 부실과 부패, 국가위기관리시스템부재 상황을 비판한다. 또한 이들은 희생자들에 대한 슬픔과 안타까움의 정서를 멜로드라마적 서사와 검푸른 바다의 영상을 통해 전달한다. 다음 단계로서 본 연구는 영화 <명량>의 영상 전략을 분석하며, 특히이 영화 내 이순신 서사의 특이성, 가령 생략된 서사로서의 역사와 과장된 스펙터클에 주목한다. 이러한 <명량>의 서사와 영상은 실제 세월호 사고 영상과 많은 유사성을 띠며, 이를 통해 사고에 대한 한국 사회내 집단기억 변형을 용이하게 한다. 이렇게 볼 때 <명량>은 세월호 참사와 유사한 국가위기 상황에 처한 이순신이 해상의 전투에서 투쟁하고 승리하는 장면을 확인함으로써 참사 이후 한국 사회 내 팽패해 있던 슬픔과 죄의식을 ‘상상적으로나마’ 치유해주는 것이라 생각할 수 있다. 이상과 같이 본 연구는 영화 <명량>이 세월호 참사로 인한 한국 사회 내 트라우마를 은폐하고 봉합하는 문화스크린으로 작동하는 방식을고찰한다. 또한 본 연구의 성과는 기존의 문화기억 연구에서 상세히 다뤄지지 않았던 블록버스터 장르의 스펙터클이 역사 재현과 문화 환타지 형성에 작동하는 방식을 논의한다는 점에서도 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This project examines how a recent Korean blockbuster The Admiral: Roaring Currents (Han-min Kim, 2014) serves as a cultural “screen” to suture a recent national disaster in Korean society. This project refers to the Freudian concept of “screen memory,” which signifies insignificant fragments of childhood memories that remain hidden and brought out at a later moment in lifetime to conceal certain (unpleasant) experiences. Based on this theoretical scaffolding, this project suggests that The Admiral, by employing the well-known cultural imagery of Admiral Yi, functions as “screen memory” that conceals the recent Korean national disaster of MV Sewol Sinking, an accident in which a ship, named Sewolho capsized and sank in the western sea of Korea. The disaster brought about hundreds of casualties in 2014, and then a resulting sense of melancholia and guilt swept Korean people. By analyzing the similarity and difference between The Admiral and popular images related to the Sinking of MV Sewol, this project suggests that the characteristic cinematography and narrative of The Admiral contribute to suturing this catastrophic trauma in Korean society.
