Abstract
In the list of items dealing with mysticism from the Pyeongyang region, Sejong-Sillok Geography quoted Tangun-gogi, borrowing and recording various myths dating back to the Tangun era and continuing through the reign of King Dongmyeongwang, and it is this content, as well as its character. The compilation of Tangun-gogi did not reveal the list of books that it quoted, but a reading of the related documents has confirmed the inclusion of material from Tangun-bongi and Dongmyeong-bongi as quoted in Jewang-ungi, along with Gu-sanmguksa and Dongmyeongwang-bongi quoted in Dongmyeongwang-pyeon. As Dongmyeongwang-bongi could not be directly examined, however, the text from both Tangun-bongi and Dongmyeong-bongi included in the final work was a product of indirect references drawn from Jewang-ungi and Dongmyeongwang-pyeon, through which one could recognize the existence of a primary document existing at roughly the same time as the compilation of Tangun-gogi but unable to be directly examined. The version of the national foundation mythology included in the list quoted in Tangun-gogi that dealt with the mystical aspects within the Pyeongyang region was intended to support the foundation mythology patterned in Ungje-si, which first listed these legends. These myths confirmed Pyeongyang as the capital dating from the Three Joseon period to Goguryeo, while depicting the interment of Dongmyeongwang in Tangun’s shrine as part of the national ceremony of centered on the shrine dedicated to successive generations of the nations’ founders. This was an effort to reveal the consciousness of the country’s historical progression as extending back to the era of Ancient Joseon. Yet, if one excludes the record found in Gogi, part of Samguk-yusa, the inclusion of Tangun-bongi, part of Jewang-ungi, is noted, and this record contains no mention of Tangun’s capital. This was aimed at confirming Pyeongyang as the sole center of the Tangun legend in order to support the transfer of the location of the ceremony dealing with the sacrifice to Tangun from the Samseongsa shrine to Pyeongyang. Containing as it does material from Tangun-bongi and Dongmyeong-bongi, both of which are quoted in Jewang-ungi, Tangun-gogi can thus be recognized as having been compiled at some point after Jewang-ungi. Rather than serving as a register containing specified titles or a work put forward as a stand-alone document, this compilation is considered to have been written with the intention of organizing the content dealing with the Pyeongyang region as part of the larger process surrounding the composition of Sejong-Sillok Geography.
