Abstract

This study reviewed the idea of five directions in Choe Chiwon’s Kyewonpilgyong(桂苑筆耕). The title of the material is called ‘Je-obangmoon(祭五方文)’, which means prayer to Gods of the five directions. The idea that appears in recorded material, such as Je-obangmoon is defined the idea of five directions and reflected the ideas of the unified Silla period. What is called the idea of five directions is, like the Eastern people’s pride, Choe Chiwon’s main idea and it boasts the unified Silla’ subjectivity. In this paper, I examined Choe Chiwon’s ideas in Je-obangmoon in relation to his idea, namely the Eastern people’s pride, and then I have clarified that the spiritual flow is linked to Buddhist Yeondeunghoe(燃燈會) or Ogwangdae(五廣大) which is developed to a type of folk performance. Because the origin of the idea of five directions in the unified Silla period was found in Buddhist’ esotericism or medieval Taoism, and these ideas were also closely related to Korean traditional ideas. So, Buddhist annual events, Taoist holiday festivals, such as Yeondeunghoe and Shangwonjae(上元齋), are all related to the idea of five directions. On the one hand, these facts mean that Ogwangdae’ spirit and its historical origins are very old. In fact, the Estern-centric thought of Choe Chiwon’s argument is a new interpretation of the traditional idea of five directions, although the idea of five directions seems to contradict Choe Chiwon’s Estern-centric thought(東方思想). He emphasized that new ideas of a new age should take place in the East. Considering his thoughts from the society and the ideological background at the time, it is not limited to praying for national well-being and good harvest. As the sun comes up in the East, It includes the meaning of opening a new world through rituals to Gods of the Five Directions.
