Abstract
This report examines the historical and cultural environment, as well as cultural assets, focusing on the excavation results of Yiseong Fortress in Sejong City. The region was known as Guji-hyeon in the Baekje Kingdom, Guemji-hyeon in Unified Silla, and Joeneui-heyon from the Goryeo Dynasty. It was later named Yiseong in the Shinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungram, Chungcheong-do Eupji(Chungcheong-do Town Journal), and Hoseo Eupji (Hoseo Town Journal). It was also described as the residential town of Yido, who was the propositus of Jeoneui Yi clan and one of the founding contributors of Goryeo. Yiseong Fortress was arranged in a three-point branch form with nearby Jeung Sanseong Fortress and Unju Sanseong Fortress. Yiseong Fortress in Sejong City was excavated once. As a result, it can be said to have great cultural value in that it has the condensed ancient Korean building techniques for fortress, including the development process of the mountain fortress during the Baekje Kingdom, the change process from an earthen fortress to a stone fortress, the creation of terraced land site, the method of building the outer wall, building the outer wall with stones and the inner wall with clays, theclay water catchment facility, thestonefortress wall built with stones both the inside and outside of the fortress by randomly stacking roughly cut stones, and supportive reinforced structures. The site was terraced around a double summit. The plan shows the sequential process of the top (4 tiers), the upper part (3 tiers), the bottom (1 tier), and the middle (2 tiers). In particular, when Baekje Kingdom first built the fortress, it was in the form of a bastion with stones stacked on the outside on the lands of the two tiers. The current 516-meter circumference can be regarded as the result of rebuilding multiple times. It is assumed that the original form was the bastions in the Han River basin and the Yangju Basin. Among the relics excavated, the red-colored roof tiles and the ear-folding method that cut thecorners at both ends reflect this influence. It is noteworthy that the structure of the relic site, construction method, and excavated artifacts had matched each other. The main structures within the fortress include the rectangular building site at the top, the water catchment site that changes from wooden to stone at the upper part of the land, the rectangular building site in the middle, and the dodecagonal building site at the bottom, which were densely located over the terraced land. The tires had same elevation difference. This shows that the four tiers of building sites and ruins were built during the same era and the dodecagonal building sites were used for various ritual activities. The lotus-patterned male roof-end tiles, artifacts in different forms, and intentionally-damaged artifacts could be the clues to this hypothesis. The report concludes with some suggested themes for research, including the condensed building process from Korean ancient to medieval times, the oldest stone fortress in the middle part of Korea, the diversity of ancient architectures, polygonal building sites with perfect structures, representative examples of the general functions and usages of ancient mountain fortresses, and the demonstration of the transition time from the powerful local clans in the middle times to descended aristocrats. Further archaeological investigations and research are necessary to materialize these ideas.
