Abstract

This study is is to examine the characteristics and value of the fortress heritage by comparing the Shilla Fortress in the Hangang River basin with the Yongin Halmisanseong Fortress. Silla began constructing the fortress to occupy the Han River basin and strengthen its control. Halmisanseong Fortress is believed to have been built around the time the administrative center was moved from Bukhansanju to Namcheonju, considering the historical situation. Halmisanseong Fortress is similar to the location of the Silla fortress, and the scale is intermediate. In addition, the construction method of Halmisanseong Fortress shares the universal characteristics of Silla Fortress. In relation to the construction of Halmisanseong Fortress, it is necessary to pay attention to the wall stones processing characteristics and the method of construction. The wall stones of Halmisanseong Fortress are elongated or rectangular flagstones and are stacked in horizontal joint. These characteristics are considered to be the characteristics of Silla Castle in the late 6th century. Since Halmisanseong Fortress was closed around the middle of the 7th century, it has secured an academic value that shows the construction technology of about a century. In addition, inside Halmisanseong Fortress, polygonal building sites and square stone building facilities that are judged to be the remains of a polygonal building were identified. The polygonal building sites of Halmisanseong Fortress are constructed earlier than the Iseongsanseong Fortress in the Han River basin or the polygonal building sites of Mangisanseong Fortress. In addition, it is important to note that the construction period is the earliest among the Shilla polygonal building sites confirmed to date. Therefore, Halmisanseong Fortress is a castle heritage of Silla representing the mid-to-late 6thcentury, and is a fortress that has sufficiently secured the value of cultural heritage in that it secures scarcity, symbolism, and representativeness.
