Abstract

This study examines 579 plain roof tiles excavated from the first trial and excavation survey at Yiseong Fortress in Sejong City, out of 628 Baekje Sabi-period tiles, excluding eaves-end and variant types. Fifteen technological attributes were analyzed based on traditional roof tile manufacturing processes. The analysis shows that the tiles of Yiseong fortress exhibit distinctive regional traits, including perforation on the tube surface, side-cutting and adjustment methods, the 'gwijeop-i' (corner folding) technique of trimming edges, composite linear patterns, barrel bands and side modifications that impart curvature. At the same time, they display general features of the Sabi period, such as the predominance of linear patterns over lattice and cord designs, smoothing of female tiles leading to plain surfaces, dominance of slab clay fabric, frequent use of cylindrical-tube production, and varied division markers, and an increased use of cord mat impressions compared to the Hanseong Period. These results place the production of the Yiseong Fortress roof tiles in the late 6th to early 7th centuries. The coexistence of diverse techniques suggests the involvement of multiple craftsmen groups, and although the roof tiles lack the refinement of central products, they provide valuable insight into regional differences and technological transmission during the Sabi period.
