본 연구는 행복 추구가 교육의 주요 목적 중 하나가 되어야 하는 정당성을 제시하고, 학생들의 행복감을 저해하는 요소로 한국의 교육문화를 분석하고 비판함으로써, 행복 증진에 기여할 수 있는 교육의 조건과 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 합리적 인간은 행복을 원하므로, 교육은 행복의 의미를 파악하고 추구할 수 있는 역량을 개발하는 학습을 증진해야 한다. 한국의 교육문화는 아동과 청소년의 특성과 차이를 무시하고, 학업과 삶에서 단일한 성공 모델만을 추구하게 요구함으로써 행복을 왜곡하고 있다. 행복을 증진하기위하여 주관적 행복감은 물론 의미 있는 삶을 지향하는 규범적 성격의 행복을 추구할 수 있는 ‘행복역량’ 개발이 필요하다. 이를 위하여 아동과 청소년들이 원하는 필요성(needs)이 충족되고 다름과 차이가 존중되어야 한다. 또한 행복역량이 증진될 수 있도록 교육문화와 학교문화가 변화되고, 학습과 교육과정이 재조직되어야 한다. 행복 학습은 지역사회와 결합되어야 더 효과적으로 진행될 수 있다.
Abstract
This study argues that we must take happiness seriously as a goal of education, presenting some practical suggestions to expand happiness through education. Korean society tends to believe that it is neither plausible nor possible to enhance happiness through education. One viable factor conducive to this trend is an educational culture which ignores the authenticity and differences of children and demands them to conform to a largely one dimensional and monolithic model of success in school and work. This educational culture contributes tremendously to decreasing the feeling of happiness among children. To ameliorate this situation, Korean education must set the goal not only of promoting the feeling of happiness but also to develop “the happiness competences” of children. Happiness competence is more than knowledge and information about happiness. It is a disposition and a skill to investigate and pursue one's own version of happiness in a way that extends the public good. In order to encourage it, educational culture must be transformed so as to respect and accommodate the diverse needs and wants of children. The curriculum must also be reorganized to allow children to experience happiness in making a home, parenting, cherishing a place, the development of character, interpersonal growth, finding work that one loves, and participating in the democratic way of life.
