Abstract

This paper aims to reconstruct key concepts of modern rhetoric through Michel Foucault’s “The Order of Discourse” (1970) and “What is an Author?” (1969), focusing on his notions of discourse and the author-function. While traditional rhetoric presupposes an autonomous rhetor who delivers meaning through the art of persuasion and identifies with the audience, Foucault argues that discourse is never freely produced, but rather constituted by specific systems of power-knowledge and institutional constraints. He also contends that the “author” is not a creative origin but a function that classifies and regulates discourse, thereby dismantling the traditional status of the rhetorical subject. Drawing on Foucault’s insights, this paper reexamines the rhetorical notions of the “speaker” and the “author,” and proposes a new rhetorical framework centered on the conditions of discourse, the interventions of power, and the mechanisms of institutional regulation. Foucault does not reject rhetoric, but rather transforms it into a theoretical space for critically analyzing the relationship between discourse and power. This suggests that modern rhetoric can move beyond the realm of persuasive technique and evolve into an ethical and political mode of analysis. Furthermore, such a theoretical reconfiguration opens the way for future research into how rhetoric and discourse might be redefined in an era marked by the emergence of nonhuman discursive agents such as generative artificial intelligence.
