수사학은 역사적 변천을 거치며 20세기에 이르러 논증의 영역이 약화되었다. 특히 퐁타니에와 쥬네트의 문채 이론의 영향으로 수사학의 중심이 논증에서 문채로 옮겨졌다. 또한 문채에 관한 이론에서 논증성의 기능과 역할이 약화되면서 문채는 담론을 장식하는 심미적 도구로 인식되기도 한다. 이 연구는 현대 수사학에서 수사학적 문채의 기능과 역할을 논증성의 관점에서 재조명하고 문채의 논증성을 복원하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 르불을 비롯한 여러 수사학자의 논의를 바탕으로 수사학적 문채는 단순한 표현기법 이상의 의미를 가지며, 청중을 설득하는 논증의 도구이자 그 자체로 논거임을 밝힌다. 특히 청중과의 직접적인 접촉을 전제하는 문채는 연설가가 의도하는 목적에 맞게 활용된다는 점에서 그 자체로 설득의 논증성을 지난다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 이 연구는 문채는 전달하고자 하는 내용과 그 내용을 담는 형태의 융합으로 봐야 한다는 문채 이론을 제시한다. 이를 통해서 문채에 대한 분석은 텍스트의 의미뿐만 아니라, 그 텍스트를 생산한 연설가 혹은 작가의 수사학적 전략, 다시 말해서 청중 혹은 독자를 설득하고 매혹하는 전략을 드러내는데 기여한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 이 연구는 문채의 중요성을 재조명하고자 한다.
Abstract
Rhetoric, through its historical evolution, saw the domain of argumentation diminish by the 20th century. Particularly influenced by the stylistic theories of Fontanier and Genette, the focus of rhetoric studies shifted from argumentation to rhetorical style. As the function and role of argumentation within stylistic theories weakened, rhetorical style came to be perceived as an aesthetic tool for embellishing discourse. This study aims to re-examine the function and role of rhetorical style from the perspective of argumentation within modern rhetoric and to restore the argumentative nature of rhetorical style. Based on the discussions of various rhetoricians, including Reboul, it reveals that rhetorical style holds a significance beyond mere expression techniques, serving as a tool of argumentation that persuades the audience and is an argument in itself. Particularly, rhetorical style, which presupposes direct contact with the audience, is employed in accordance with the speaker's intended purpose, thus possessing its own argumentative persuasion. This study also presents the theory that style should be regarded as a fusion of the content to be conveyed and the form that contains the content. Through this, the analysis of style not only highlights the meaning of the text but also reveals the rhetorical strategy of the speaker or writer who produced the text, that is, the strategy to persuade and captivate the audience or readers. Through these discussions, this study aims to re-highlight the importance of style.
