Abstract
East Asian military balance of power forced the Khitan empire to adopt passive strategies of the “conservative Manchurian frontier state” in the 11th century. A comprehensive assessment of the Khitan military power needs to take into account various factors such as the size of the military, effectiveness of the cavalry, topography, and military strategies, etc. In the early 10th century, the Khitan expanded its influence into Manchuria and the steppe regions of Mongolia. It also destroyed the Later Jin and occupied the ancient capital city of Kaifeng in 947, but had to retreat within three months as it encountered fierce Han Chinese resistance. The Khitan would never again attempt to conquer territories within the China Proper or send expeditions deep into the Song territory except in 1004, when the Khitan force advanced to the northern shore of the Yellow River. After the Treaty of Shanyuan with the Song, the Khitan also clashed with the Korean state of Goryeo for several decades. However, the Khitan sought to maintain peaceful relations with both Goryeo and Tangut Xia to secure its borders. Khitan troops were rarely able to capture well-defended walled towns and fortresses and struggled against Song’s defensive system of artificial lakes, ditches, and forests. The powerful Khitan cavalry forces found little military success in foreign expeditions as they fought in unfamiliar environment. Limitations of the Khitan military power was an important factor for the peace in the mid-11th century Northeast Asia.
