Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to analyze how professionals and lay people perceive persons with intellectual disabilities(ID) using the Korean version of the Attitudes Toward Intellectual Disability Questionnaire(K-ATTID). K-ATTID provides the scores of multidimensional attitude and cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitudes. Method: Paired t-test ware conducted to compare the attitudes toward persons with mild and severe intellectual disabilities. Independent t-test was conducted to compare the attitudes toward ID of professionals and lay people. One-way ANOVA was conducted to compare the attitudes toward intellectual disabilities of five different professional groups; special education teachers, general education teachers, social workers, therapists, medical doctors. Results: The results showed more negative attitudes towards people with lower functioning ID. More positive attitudes were revealed from professionals than lay people. Among five professional groups, the attitudes of social workers and special education teachers were more positive than doctors and general teachers and the attitudes of therapists towards persons with ID were more positive than general school teachers. Conclusion: This study is the first study in Korea that examines the differences among five different professionals’attitudes and differences between the disability-related professionals’and general public’s attitudes toward persons with intellectual disabilities in one study. Significance of this study’s results and some suggestions were further discussed.
