Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the health status and current health support programs available to workers with disabilities through feedback from companies employing a significant number of workers with disabilities and the workers themselves. Additionally, it sought to propose policy alternatives for promoting their health. Method: The study conducted two rounds of focus group interviews with 10 company representatives and in-depth individual interviews with 10 workers with disabilities. Results: The findings revealed that the overall health status of workers with disabilities was poor, with obesity, lifestyle issues, and aging identified as major contributing factors. Employers provided health management support through sick leave, paid leave, and national health check-ups but often did not implement active health promotion programs such as exercise initiatives. Barriers included limited resources for small businesses and challenges related to ensuring the self-determination of workers with disabilities. Workers with disabilities reported experiencing chronic diseases and depression, as well as difficulties with communication and mobility when visiting medical facilities. Their health management needs included exercise programs, home-visit physicians, and programs for managing alcohol consumption and smoking cessation. Conclusion: The study highlights the need for financial support and information dissemination for small businesses, along with tailored health promotion programs suited to workplace sizes, to effectively enhance the health of workers with disabilities.
