초록

칼빈에 대한 많은 연구는 주로 조직신학이나 교회사에서 이루어졌다. “종교개혁은 기독교교회 역사 가운데 위대한 설교가 만든 아마도 가장 거대한 개혁이었다.”는 파티(Charles Partee)의 말을 생각할 때마다 그리고 평생을 목회자로, 설교자로 사역한 칼빈의 삶을 돌아보면 설교자 칼빈에 대한 관심과 연구는 너무 부족했던 것이 사실이다. 최근 그의 설교와 성경해석법 등에 대한 관심이 커지고 있는 것은 다행한 일이다. 자신을 성경선생으로 여기고, 자신의 가장 중요한 과업이 설교라고 보았던 칼빈의 설교에 대해 연구하는 것은 그러므로 의미 있다. 설교는 항상 특정한 상황(context)에서 행해진다. 한 사람의 설교를 바르게 이해하려면 그러므로 그를 둘러싼 환경, 즉 설교환경에 대한 분석이 절대적이다. 이에 본고는 먼저 칼빈의 설교환경이랄 수 있는 칼빈 이전의 설교, 성경관, 교회관, 그의 교구이자 그가 섬겼던 회중들 삶의 전 영역이랄 수 있는 제네바의 개혁을 위해 그가 사용했던 권징에 대해 알아보고 이를 토대로 설교자 칼빈의 설교를 입체적으로 조명했다. 칼빈처럼 별명이 많은 사람이 있었을까? 신학자, 목회자, 성경의 신학자, 해석자, 교부의 학생, 논리의 대가, 행정가, 치리가, 목회신학자……. 그러나 그는 그 모든 것 위에 설교자였다. 칼빈은 본문을 통해 이미 주어진 의미를 ‘있는 그대로’ 그리고 ‘충분히’ 드러내는데 신실했고, 저자의 의도에 충실했으며, 말씀중심, 본문 중심적 설교로 말씀과 성령이 분리되지 않고, 성육신한 그리스도 안에서 말씀과 성령이 분리되지 않으며, 그리고 말씀 안에서 삼위 하나님이 분리되지 않고 하나 될 뿐 아니라 회중과 하나 되기 위해 적절한 언어로 소통하며 최선을 다했던 하나님 말씀에 대한 파토스와 하나님의 사람에 대한 파토스를 가진 열정의 사람, 확신의 설교자였다. 칼빈을 닮은 설교자들이 하나님의 교회마다 세워져 말씀의 홍수 속에서 오히려 말씀에 기갈한 영혼들을 해갈할 수 있기를 소원한다.

Abstract

Although much researches have been done regarding his theology, yet the interest in Calvin's preaching was not enough. It is therefore meaningful to examine the preaching of Calvin who considered himself as a Bible-teacher and thought preaching his calling God gave. Preaching is practicing always in the specific context. For understanding one's preaching right, it is necessary to determine his or her surroundings that is called preaching context. In that reason, this study first concentrated on the sermons before Calvin, his viewpoint of the Bible, Church and Geneva Consistory. With the result came out of the first work, the researcher tried to build Calvin's preaching omni-directionally. Although he had been called by many names such as a theologian, pastor, interpreter, administrator, but Calvin was a preacher above all. He was sincere enough to show the biblical truth as it was and as much as he could. His text-centered preaching was faithful enough to reveal the intention of the biblical authors and did not divide the Word from the Spirit. Besides, he took good care of the congregations who listened to his sermon with easy and proper words they used most. Calvin the preacher was a man of passion to God and God's people and a man of confidence of the Bible as God's Word. The researcher hopes to see many preachers who live and lead like Calvin in the Korean church so that they could appease world's thirst as he had done in his time.
