‘설교가로서의 쟝 깔뱅’에 대한 현대설교학적 재조명

2009년은 종교개혁가 쟝 깔뱅 탄생 500주년을 맞는 역사적인 해이다. 깔뱅은 2,000년 기독교 역사에서 종교개혁가로서 교회를 개혁하고, 신학자로서 개신교 신학에 지대한 영향을 미쳤으며, 또한 사회개혁가로서 제네바시를 기독교 신앙으로 개혁하고자 했었던 행동가로 높이 평가받고 있다. 그의 사상은 개혁교회(the Reformed Church) 신학의 토대가 되었으며, 오늘의 개혁교회는 그를 개혁교회 신학의 창시자로 여기고 있다. 그러나 그 동안 깔뱅에 관한 연구나 평가는 일반적으로 ‘개혁가요 조직신학자로서의 깔뱅’에 초점이 맞추어져 왔던 것이 사실이다. 이에 반해 설교학적인 측면에서 ‘설교가로서의 깔뱅’에 관한 연구는 그렇게 많지 않았고, 깊이 있는 연구 역시 부족했었다. 하지만 깔뱅은 하나님의 말씀으로 하나님의 교회를 개혁하고자 했었던 열정적인 한 사람의 설교자였음을 우리는 기억해야 한다. 그의 중심에는 “하나님의 말씀”이 언제나 자리잡고 있었고, 이것은 언제나 그의 사상과 신학과 개혁의 모티브(motive)로 작용하였었다. 그는 제네바에서 목회를 하면서 수천편의 설교를 통해 하나님의 말씀을 선포하였고, 그 말씀들과 함께 제네바를 개혁의 도시로 변화시켰던 것이다. 따라서 본 논문은 깔뱅 탄생 500주년을 맞아 설교학적 측면에서 쟝 깔뱅을 재조명해보고, 그의 설교론을 연구 정리하면서, 그것을 현대 설교학의 관점에서 비교 분석함으로써 설교가로서의 쟝 깔뱅에 대한 평가를 시도하고, 그에 대한 인식을 새롭게 하고자 한다.
Abstract
This year is a significant time in the history of Christianity, especially in the Reformed family of Protestants churches. 2009 is the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth. Many churches are celebrating the achievements of John Calvin and theologians are researching his theological theories in their respective areas. John Calvin is credited in Christian history as a remarkable reformer who reshaped the spoiled church at the end of the Middle Ages, a prominent scholar who established Protestant theology and through it influenced numerous people and churches, a social reformer who changed Geneva by Christian faith and biblical principles. In the Reformed church he is respected as its theological founder and church theologians even today are studying attentively his theological themes and trying to follow his teachings. Much academic research has been conducted on John Calvin, but most research focuses almost exclusively on Calvin as a reformer and systematic theologian, while few studies focus on Calvin as a preacher, and even most of these are not in depth of homiletical studies. But we have to remember John Calvin first as an excellent preacher who tried to reform the church of God by the Word of God. Always in the center of his heart was the Word of God. This Word functioned as the motive of his thought and theology and reformation. He preached almost daily over a number of years. He proclaimed the Word of God through thousands of sermons while he ministered as a pastor in Geneva, and he changed Geneva into a city of the Reformation with his preaching. Therefore, this article attempts to illuminate John Calvin as a preacher and analyze the theory and world of his preaching. In addition, the article makes a comparative study of his preaching theory within current perspectives on homiletics. This work might be very helpful both in evaluating and acknowledging John Calvin as a great preacher at this point in time as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of his birth.
