재건설과 개혁: 『재세례파 논박』에 나타난 칼빈의 종교개혁 이해

칼빈을 포함한 주요 개혁자들은 당시 로마 가톨릭의 여러 가지 오류에 맞서 성경의 진리에 따라 기독교 종교의 회복하는 종교개혁을 추구했다. 그러나 이 종교개혁은 기존의 모든 교리와 체계를 거부한 급진적 입장과도 달랐다. 여러 유사점들에도 불구하고 칼빈이 급진주의를 더 강하게 비판한 것은 종교개혁은 기존의 모든 것을 부인한 뒤 이루는 “재건설”이 아니라 성경이 가르치는 명확한 진리를 재확인함으로써 추구하는 본질의 “회복”이었기 때문이다. 본 논문은 “재세례파”로 통칭한 급진주의의 주장들에 대한 칼빈의 반박을 분석함으로써 그가 제시하려 했던 종교개혁의 개념이 무엇이었는지 재구성하려 한다. 이를 위해 칼빈의 여러 저술들 가운데 1544년 출판된 『재세례파 논박』을 중심으로 관련 저술들을 분석할 것이다. 본론에서는 이 저술의 등장하기까지 재세례파에 대한 칼빈의 이해와 상황적 배경을 다룬 후 이어서 성경, 교회, 그리고 세속사회에 대한 재세례파의 급진적 주장을 그가 어떻게 비판했는지 검토할 것이다. 이를 통해 칼빈이 일관되게 제시한 “종교개혁”의 토대와 방법 그리고 범위를 드러낼 것이다. 결론에서는 본론의 분석을 통해 확인한 칼빈의 종교개혁 이해를 정리하고 그 의의를 제시할 것이다. 16세기 종교개혁을 정확하게 기념하여 오늘날 한국 교회에 바르게 적용하기 위해서는 칼빈을 비롯한 종교개혁자들이 왜 로마 가톨릭의 적폐를 비판하면서 동시에 재세례파와 급진세력의 주장을 거부했는지를 간과해서는 안 된다. 그들은 로마 가톨릭과 급진 세력 양편을 모두 비판하면서 이에 맞서 성경이 가르치는 명확한 구원 진리를 개혁의 기초와 목적으로 강조했다. 종교개혁은 무엇보다도 하나님의 주권적 은혜를 드러냄으로써 하나님께만 영광을 돌리려는 위한 반성과 회복의 노력이었다.
Abstract
Calvin and other magistrate reformers pursued the religious reformation against errors and corruptions of Roman Catholicism. However, this reformation was different from the radical ideas. In spite of some similarities, Calvin strongly refuted those radical views because the reformation was not a restitution of reconstructing the whole Christian religion after demolishing the every existing doctrinal and ecclesiastical structure. For him, the proper reformation was the recovery of the substance and foundation of the true Christian religion according to the consistent and manifest truth in Scripture. This study aims to illustrate Calvin’s idea of the reformation by examining his criticism of the anabaptists’ radical ideas. Calvin’s “Treatise against the Anabaptists” published in 1544 and the other related works will be analyzed for this examination. After the review of the historical background of Calvin’s works against the anabaptists, three themes will be investigated to compared Calvin’s reformation to the radical restitution: Bible, Church, and secular government. This investigation tries to manifest Calvin’s consistent understanding of foundation, methods, and sphere of the reformation. This study hope to clarify Calvin’s idea of the religious reformation and find its significance for contemporary Christianity. It is necessary to acknowledge the reformers’ arguments against the anabaptist radical ideas as well as the Roman Catholics in order to exactly commemorate and correctly apply the legacy of the sixteenth-century reformation. Against both the Roman Catholic idolatry and the radical delusion, Calvin and the reformers emphasized the clear and distinct truth of God’s sovereign grace of salvation in Scripture. The proper way of the reformation, according to Calvin, is the constant endeavor of reflection and restoration to recover the true religion of Christian Church and glorify God’s name alone.
