참 경건에 대한 칼빈의 이해와 실천

초록

칼빈은 종교개혁자로서 중세 말 로마 가톨릭의 종교 체계를 불경건이라고 비판하고 성경에 근거한 기독교의 참 경건을 회복하기 위해 노력했다. 본 논문의 목적은 칼빈의 참 경건의 이해와 그 실현을 위한 시도 모두가 공동체적인 측면에서 제시되었으며 율법의 규범적 기준을 따라 추구되었음을 증명하는 것이다. 이를 위해 칼빈이 그가 견지한 적극적이며 실천적인 율법의 제3용도에 대한 이해로부터 참된 경건의 개념을 주장했을 뿐 아니라 율법의 규범을 일반적 기준으로 삼아 경건의 공동체적 구현을 추구했음을 논증할 것이다. 이를 위하여 가장 먼저 칼빈이 당시 로마 가톨릭의 불경건을 비판하면서 제시한 기독교 신앙의 참 경건의 개념과 그 원리를 검토할 것이다. 그 후 참 경건의 표현의 현장인 예배와 경건의 훈련의 장인 그리스도인의 공동체적 삶에 대해 칼빈이 어떤 실천적 제안을 제시했는지 검토할 것이다. 결론에서는 칼빈의 경건 이해와 실천의 노력이 오늘날 교회를 위해 가질 수 있는 현대적 의의를 간략하게 제안할 것이다. 칼빈은 로마 가톨릭이 만들어 놓은 외형중심의 경건 체계의 오류를 비판하고 참 경건은 하나님의 사랑에 대한 깨달음에 의한 내면적 변화에서 시작되어야 한다고 말했다. 그러나 칼빈은 참 경건이 공동체적 실천으로 나타나야 하며 율법이 대표하는 성경의 가르침에 따라 지속적으로 훈련되어야 한다고 강조했다. 21세기 한국 교회의 상황 속에서도 칼빈의 경건 이해와 그 실천을 위한 시도들은 의미 있는 역사적 교훈을 던져준다. 특히 그가 강조한 참 경건의 공동체적인 성격과, 경건의 구체적 실천에 있어 율법의 가르침을 신적 규범으로 삼은 해석은 특정한 시대와 지역을 차이를 넘어서 성경의 권위를 존중하는 모든 기독교 공동체에게 보편적이며 유효한 경건 추구의 교훈을 제공한다.

Abstract

As a protestant reformer, John Calvin criticized the Roman Catholic religious system as impiety, and endeavored to recover the true piety from the biblical point of view. This paper aims to argue that Calvin’s idea of true piety and his practical proposal of piety are presented with the universal and definitive standard of God’s Words for the Christian community. In particular, it is argued that Calvin’s positive and covenantal interpretation of the third use of the law is an essential foundation upon which he suggested the right meaning of true piety and pursued its realization in Christian life. For this purpose, this study reviews Calvin’s idea of true piety and its principles, which are contrasted with wrong teaching and practice of the Roman Catholic impiety. After this review, this study deals with Calvin’s suggestions of reforming worship service and Christian life, For Calvin, worship service is the expressive field of true piety, and Christian life is the disciplinal field of piety. In conclusion, significance of Calvin’s idea and practice of true piety for the Christian communities today is briefly mentioned. Criticizing the errors of the Roman Catholic rituals and teachings of Christian life, Calvin consistently argued that true piety had to start with the inner change which arises from the recognition of God’s sincere love. However, he never forget to emphasize that true piety should be manifested in the communal dimension and continuously exercised faithful to the God’s commandment. His emphasis on the communal character of piety, and the interpretation of the law as the divine standard of practicing piety provide a general and effective lesson for every Christian community which has a high sense of the authority of scripture.
