공공신학의 관점에서 본 존 칼빈의 신학

초록

최근 한국 기독교인들 사이에서, 그리고 교회와 신학계 안에서 '교회의 공공성', '공적영역에서 교회의 역할'과 같은 주제에 대한 관심이 점점 증가하고 있다. 사실 이러한 주제들은 이미 세계 곳곳의 기독교인들과 대학을 포함한 다양한 연구 기관들에 의해서 '공공신학'(Public Theology)이라는 방법론을 통하여 활발하게 논의 중이다. 반면에 한국에서는 상대적으로 공공신학이 충분히 다뤄지지 못하고 있다. 특히 보수 개혁주의 신학계에서는 공공신학이 의심스러운 방법론으로 여겨지는 경향이 있다. 그러나 실제로 공공신학의 형식과 내용을 분석해보면, 공공신학과 개혁주의 신학 사이에 공유할 수 있는 지점이 생각보다 많다는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 이 점에 착안하여 본 연구는 공공신학의 렌즈를 통하여 존 칼빈(John Calvin)의 생애와 신학사상 그리고 제네바(Geneva)에서의 그의 목회와 활동을 조명한다. 칼빈은 그의 사상을 개진해 나감에 있어서 교회 전통을 중요하게 여겼고, 교부들과 고대 철학자들의 사상을 적절하게 인용하였다. 나아가 인문학과 과학 그리고 법학적 지식을 풍부하게 활용하면서 복음과 신앙의 원리를 설명하려 노력하였다. 하지만 동시에 그는 철저하게 ‘오직 성경’ 위에 자신의 삶과 사상의 기준을 세웠다. 그가 종교의 개혁뿐만 아니라 사회의 개혁에도 힘썼음이 강조되어야한다. 이러한 강조는 그가 공공선을 위하여 정치와 사회를 향하여 기독교 신앙에 기반을 둔 적절한 방향을 제시한 것으로부터 나온다. 그는 항상 선지자적 목소리를 내는 것을 주저하지 않았다. 그는 다른 지역의 신학자들과 교류하며 영향을 주고받았으며 그의 신학은 시대와 공간을 초월하여 지금도 세계 곳곳에서 영향력을 미치고 있다. 이렇게 종교개혁자 존 칼빈을 공공신학자의 모델로 제시하는 것에 의해 오늘날 논의되고 있는 공공신학의 담론에 새로운 시좌를 열어가게 될 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 칼빈의 신학사상과 공공신학 사이의 교집합을 발견하는 것에 의해 공공신학을 향한 한국개혁교회의 바른 이해도 촉구하게 될 것이다. 이렇게 함으로써, 한국 교회는 교회 내부를 향해 사회 문제들에 대하여 대응할 수 있는 능력을 제공할 것이고, 교회 외부를 향해 복음에 기반한 도덕적 방향성을 제시함으로써 기여할 것이다.

Abstract

There has been increasing interest in the issues such as 'the publicity of the church' and 'the role of the church in the public square' among Korean Christians, churches and academics. Indeed, Christians and various research institutes including universities around the world are vigorously discussing these issues through the approach of 'public theology'. Contrariwise, public theological discourses are insufficient in Korea. In particular, conservative Korean church tends to regard public theology as a suspicious approach. However, indeed, when analyzing the structures and contents of public theologies, we will probably realize that there are many sharable points between public theology and reformed theology. With this in mind, this project examines John Calvin’s life, thoughts and his ministry in Geneva through the hermeneutic lense of public theology. Calvin regarded the traditions of the church as important in advancing his thoughts and appropriately quoted the ideas of the Fathers and ancient philosophers. Furthermore, he tried to explain the principles of the Gospel and faith while making abundant use of humanities, science, and legal knowledge. At the same time, however, he thoroughly set the standard of his life and thoughts on the basis of Sola Scriptura. It should be emphasized that he worked not only for religious reform but also for social reform. This emphasis comes from his suggestion of an appropriate direction based on Christian faith toward politics and society for the common good. He always did not hesitate to speak up a prophetic voice. He interacted with and influenced theologians from other regions, and his theology transcends time and space, and is still influential all over the world. By presenting the Reformer, John Calvin, as a model of public theologian, this project will provide a new perspective to the discourse of public theology that is being discussed today. In addition, the discovery of the intersection between Calvin's theological thought and public theology will urge the Korean Reformed church's correct understanding of public theology. To do so, the Korean church will provide people inside the church with the ability to respond to social issues and contribute to people outside the church by presenting the moral direction based on the gospel.
