Abstract
This study’s purpose is to explore concepts of the will in ancient philosophy as the sources of the theological elements of Augustine’s free will, which occupy an important place in the history of Christian thought. The study also seeks to analyze Augustine’s concept of free will, which is structured theologically using eclectic philosophical concepts. Pre-Christian ancient philosophers were already interested in the relationship between world order and human freedom and they made efforts to philosophically establish these concepts. In particular, Augustine’s concept of freedom is connected to Stoicism, Aristotelianism, and Platonism. Therefore, this study will first investigate the principle of operation, the true freedom of will, and determinism in the Stoic philosophy. Second, this study will analyze the principle of voluntary movement and causality in Alexander of Aphrodisias, who is Aristotle’s commentator. Third, this study will examine concepts of the will tending towards the One and the problem of evil in Plotinus. At the same time, this study will reveal the ideological traces from ancient philosophy inherent in Augustine’s works and the original theories behind his understanding of free will. Studying ancient philosophy as one of the sources of Augustinian free will will illuminate the history of the establishment Christian anthropology and the connection between patristic theology and ancient philosophy. Finally, the study will also further establish the relationship between theology and philosophy or faith and reason.
