Abstract

This study evaluates how the Hebrew word 'musar' is translated in the Book of Proverbs in the New Korean Revised Version (NKRV) and suggests alternative translations. The NKRV typically renders musar as "discipline," while many English translations prefer "instruction." The Hebrew term carries a range of meanings - from instruction and discipline to punishment and chastisement - opening up various translation possibilities. The research methodology encompasses three approaches: analyzing the original Hebrew using authoritative dictionaries (NIDOTTE, DCH, TDOT), examining the semantic field of corresponding Korean terms, and evaluating contextual appropriateness through Hebrew poetic structure analysis. A statistical review of the 30 occurrences of musar in Proverbs reveals that the NKRV translates it as "instruction" once, "chastisement" once, "punishment" four times, and "discipline" 24 times. This contrasts markedly with English translations like the ESV and NRSV, which favor "instruction" (19 times). The findings highlight how verse structure and content, particularly parallelism in Hebrew poetry, critically influence translation choices. In passages emphasizing education or wisdom without corrective overtones, "instruction" proves more fitting than "discipline." The study concludes that the NKRV's preference for discipline-centered translations warrants reassessment, especially in contexts focused on teaching rather than correction. This research advances biblical translation studies by underscoring the importance of considering both structural and semantic elements across source and target languages, while remaining attentive to words' semantic fields.
