Abstract
This paper examines the role of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Revelation and its theological implications by categorizing the phrases and concepts like “in spirit” (1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 21:10), “the seven spirits” (1:4; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6), and the spirit of words and prophecy (2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22; 19:10; 14:13; 22:17). First, John as a prophet uses the phrase “in spirit” to emphasize that the visions and prophetic words in Revelation are given by the Spirit. It means that the readers should accept the authority of the words rather than attempt to experience what John did. Second, the seven spirits refers to the Holy Spirit in heaven (1:4; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6). The seven Spirits are represented as seven lamps and seven eyes as in Zechariah 4. The churches as the lampstands on earth need the seven lamps and eyes which symbolize the Holy Spirit. Third, the Holy Spirit speaks to the churches. What the Spirit says to the churches is what Jesus speaks to the churches (2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22). The Spirit speaks to the churches (14:13; 22:17). The fact that the Spirit is the spirit of prophecy (19:10) implies that the source of prophecy is the Spirit. The faithful testimony to Jesus through God’s servants should result in worshiping God and hoping for the coming of Jesus Christ.
