아우구스티누스와 에드워즈의 감정 신학 : emotion과 affection의 차이를 중심으로

Abstract

Augustinus and Jonathan Edwards are well-known theologians within the Reformed tradition who placed significant emphasis on the heart. Rather than defining the heart from the intellect-dominant perspective prevalent in Western society, they highlighted the importance of emotion. However, understanding their theology of emotion requires recognizing that the term emotion was not in use during their time. This study traces scholarly research on their theology of emotion, distinguishing between the uses of passion and affection and analyzing the differences between the concept of affection as they understood it and the contemporary notion of emotion. In particular, the study explores the characteristics of affection in relation to intellect and will, while also examining the concept of affection from the perspective of love. Based on the theology of emotion developed by Augustinus and Edwards, this study underscores the need for a balanced understanding of emotion. It addresses the tensions between emotional excess in faith on one hand and the neglect of emotion in faith on the other, arguing that emotion reveals their true significance when harmoniously integrated with intellect and will. This study ultimately aims to encourage the establishment of a balanced perspective on emotion in faith.
