Abstract

Augustine accepted Plato-Aristotle's theory of emotion and Stoic's theory of emotion and criticized, reinterpreted, and reconstructed it according to Christian doctrine to build his own theory of emotion. However, various interpretations of his theory of emotion arise. The interpretation of distinguishing between low-level emotions and high-order emotions and expressing them in terms of affectio and passio collides with the interpretation that there is no such distinction. Stoicism argues that propatheia (a preliminary movement) alone is not an emotion, but only with consent it becomes an emotion. Augustine argues that emotions can arise without the consent of the will, while elsewhere he argues that the will determines emotions. It makes some scholars suspect that there is a contradiction. In order to properly understand Augustine's theory of emotion, it is necessary to make an order between these arguments, so this paper deals with these issues in the first part. So the conclusion reached is as follows. There are places where Augustine seems to use affectio and passio separately, but overall, he did not strictly follow this distinction systematically but used those words flexibly. Augustine followed the Stoic concept of emotion that distinguishes preliminary movements from emotions, but gave up later. Augustine seems to acknowledge two kinds of emotions. There are emotions that arise irrespective of the will, and there are emotions that arise out of love and will. Augustine's connection of emotion and will in this way is related to Augustine's theological position that the distorted choice of the will is the origin of evil. According to Christian theology, Augustine divides and describes the emotional state of the first parents before the Fall, the emotional state as a punishment experienced by mankind in this world after the fall, and the emotional state in heaven where the salvation of emotions is completed. It can be confirmed that Augustine initially accepted Stoic's theory of emotion and followed it, but later criticized and reconstructed it from the standpoint of Christian theology.
