Abstract
This paper critically evaluates Hans Küng’s theological argument for the inclusion of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) within Christian ethics. Küng considers PAS as a manifestation of human autonomy and compassion, interpreting it fundamentally as an aspect of God’s love and mercy. By reinterpreting traditional Christian doctrines, Küng underscores self-determination as a divinely bestowed responsibility while critiquing traditional Christian ethics as overly rigid and lacking compassion. However, this paper argues that Küng’s emphasis on compassion as a moral obligation, grounded in human autonomy, lacks sufficient theological and biblical foundation. Furthermore, it contends that Küng’s position disrupts the balance between divine sovereignty, individual autonomy, and communal responsibility, thereby weakening the theological and communal dimensions of Christian ethics. In conclusion, this paper underscores that Christian ethics must preserve the sanctity of life while maintaining theological coherence and communal care. True compassion, it argues, lies in offering dignity, comfort, and accompaniment to terminally ill patients, grounded in divine mercy and theological integrity.
