Abstract

The fundamental motivation of the debate on euthanasia is to respect the patient's autonomous decision for escaping from the unbearable situations of pain. The patient's autonomy and freedom from pain are important values that we cannot choose but admit. If the elimination of pain and the patient's autonomy is applied to the situation of death and to the medical practice of doctor in this situation, the attitude of people would be divided. To be frank with you, it would be presumtuous that we discuss the legitimacy and improperness of patient's decision. If we are to object to euthanasia regarding the dignity of life, we should be in favor of it on the same basis. The reason why the discussion on euthanasia cannot come up to the connecting point is above all due not only to the fact that patient's autonomy and severe pain should be satisfied at the same time, but also to the fact that the boundary between them is obscure. In case of euthanasia, the subjective judgment of patient and doctor, instead of objective norms, play a decisive role and the relationship between patient and doctor is presupposed. The general pros and cons upon euthanasia are set up too broad and unclear. Death in the Christian perspective implies God‘s sovereignty to man. It would rather be a personal and relational event, than a individual and biological one. Just as we decide to die, it may be opposed to God's sovereignty to human life that we refuse to die. If the human life is given by God, he becomes a steward who is in charge of his own life and the end of his life does not rely on his decision. This approach paves the way for the willing, indirect and passive euthanasia. To receive death by patient's own decision can be in a certain sense christian. It is to recognize and to respond to God's sovereignty over life. Now a forward discuss on euthanasia should go forth to "end-of-life-care" in a whole sense.
