A Study on Sentence Patterns Implying Complaint for Korean Language Learners －focused on relations between complaint pragmatics and quotation expressions－

The purpose of this study is to investigate the complaint pragmatics that have not received much interest in Korean language research. For this purpose, this study first categorizes the sentence patterns that represent complaint expressions. It seems very important for Korean language teaching to present the examples of complaint in Korean context and to categorize individual sentence patterns according to different implications of complaint. This study then conducts a cognizant test by native speakers to justify the validity of categorization. This study also examines the correlation between sentence patterns and complaint strategies based on the total fifty categories of complaint expressions. By this analysis, this study distinguishes direct complaint strategy from indirect complaint strategy that has various characteristics. In particular, this study finds that complaint expressions with a high frequency have an implication of “reconfirmation” or “quotation”. This study attempts to infer the reasons for this kind of complaint, strategy.
