Abstract

Taek-yung Kim, modern awakening and the influence of Chinese literary men Kim, Dong-Hoon During the turning point between the modern period and the present age Taek-yung Kim, Chang-gang, was influenced by illuminist thinkers, such as Yu-wee Kang, Yanfu, and Zhangqian in China he lived in exile; he found that the union between material civilization of the West and spiritual civilization of Confucianism and the commercial and industrial growth of capitalism of national independence were the way to Korean modernization; he was transformed into a modern historian who had independent persona lity and examined the historical lesson of the Chosun Dynasty from the standpoint of the evolutionist outlook on the universe. His ideal of modernization of national independence as an anti-Japanese intellectual showed the composition of consciousness that was opposed to pro-Japanese intellectuals' intention to modernize in Japanese style.
