Abstract

This study examines the interaction between ruling power and place memory, focusing particularly on the process of colonial rule and its subsequent overcoming, and how these dynamics influenced the spatial perception of urban residents. After the transition to modernity, the Hwangtohyeon area underwent a process of place identity deconstruction and reconstruction, shaped by shifting ideological structures. Until the late Joseon period, Hwangtohyeon functioned as a major intersection in Hanseong and later became a central axis for royal processions during the Korean Empire. However, following Japan’s annexation of Korea, the ruling authority was transferred to the Japanese colonial government, which implemented a large-scale administrative reorganization in 1914. As a result, the name “Hwangtohyeon” was erased from official records, and the surrounding area was consolidated under the name “Gwanghwamun-tong”. During the 1910s and 1920s, urban renewal projects-including land flattening and street expansion-transformed Gwanghwamun-tong Square into a major transportation hub linking northern and southern Gyeongseong (Keijō) while simultaneously serving as an administrative center for Japanese colonial governance. This transformation reflected Japan's intention to restructure Gyeongseong's urban layout along a north-south axis, enhancing access to areas like Jingogae and Yongsan, which had emerged as prominent Japanese residential districts. Newspaper articles from the period directly capture the social perception and power dynamics underlying these toponymic changes. Before 1910, Hwangtohyeon was frequently depicted as a site of emerging urban lifestyles. However, after its official disappearance, references to the name declined sharply. From the 1920s onward, the newly designated “Gwanghwamun-tong” became the dominant term, and the discourse surrounding the area shifted toward urban planning concerns, such as municipal street reform and the Greater Gyeongseong Master Plan. Furthermore, most articles from this period describe the area as a functional yet chaotic space with frequent accidents, indicating a shift in the colonial authority's perception and characterization of the location. After liberation, as part of efforts to eradicate the remnants of colonial rule, Japan's urban planning legacy was largely overturned, and the area was renamed “Sejong-ro”. Notably, in the 1950s and 1960s, newspaper articles invoked the historical name “Hwangtohyeon” as a means of rekindling national consciousness, while at the same time, some residents continued to use the old name out of habit. More than half a century later, Gwanghwamun Square-formerly the Hwangtohyeon area-remains one of Seoul's most iconic spaces. However, it continues to present an ongoing challenge in balancing preservation, historical restoration, and contemporary urban transformation, underscoring the need for a thoughtful approach to managing place identity in the evolving urban landscape. Key word : Hwangtohyeon, Gwanghwamun Square, Place Identity, Toponym, Colonialism
