Abstract

This paper focuses on Gyeongseong, a modern tourist destination during the Japanese colonial period. It also examines topos as a specific space or place in the Gyeongseong map of the tourist pamphlet published by the Railway Bureau of the Japanese Government-General of Korea. This study examines how the Japanese colonial Gyeongseong was spatialized and visualized, and how the ruling power was embedded, through tourist maps. The specific research subject is eight maps from a series of pamphlets on Gyeongseong from 1925 to 1937. In each map, the railway and road network are commonly emphasized. It represents modernized Joseon (Gyeongseong). In addition, the Japanese notation of place names and administrative district names clearly visualizes the spatial order of the empire. The reader of the map is conscious of its proximity and connectivity to the Japanese mainland and establishes Gyeongseong as a local. On the other hand, it formed a kind of imaginary geography by accepting Keijo as a bridgehead for imperial expansion through the railroad network leading to Manchuria. And In this paper, I have identified the characteristics of the topos that are noticeable in each direction of Gyeongseong, east, west, south, and north. In the south and north, Yongsan Station and Gyeongseong Station were examined, and in the east and west, Gyeongseong Stadium and Prison were examined. hey represent contrasting properties in symmetrical positions. However, they are analyzed as symbols of Gyeongseong's modernization and civilization based on the logic of the empire. In conclusion, Japan placed spaces (places) that proved their presence on all four sides of the Gyeongseong map. In other words, they diagrammed Gyeongseong, a city incorporated into the empire, and implanted the legitimacy of colonial rule.
