Abstract

This study investigates the actual implementation and historical change in the corvée labor duties (kugyŏk, 國役) performed by Myŏnjujŏn (綿紬廛), one of the key merchant guilds (sijŏn, 市廛) in late Chosŏn Dynasty Seoul. Unlike ordinary merchants, sijŏn were responsible for supplying government- demanded goods (called chinbae, 進排) in exchange for trade monopolies (kŭmnanjŏngwŏn, 禁亂廛權), and were thus obligated to perform various forms of labor service for the state. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources-most notably the Haenggun (行軍), Kunbangguch'aek (軍防口册), and Kunjŏngganch'aek (軍井間册) from the Kawai collection at Kyoto University-this paper provides the first quantitative and institutional analysis of Myŏnjujŏn’s corvée labor obligations. The types of service included wallpapering, window repair, sewing ceremonial fabrics, shrine repairs, table setup for rituals, courier tasks, packaging, interior decoration of ritual items, and royal tomb services. Special attention is paid to the 1887 implementation of the Chegakchŏn-ŭnggun-chŏlmok (諸各廛應軍節目), a royal ordinance that restructured labor conscription procedures. The findings reveal that, following this ordinance, the annual number of service instances dropped from approximately 200 to below 40, and the total conscripted manpower decreased from around 1,500 to fewer than 400 annually. Additionally, the issuance of service orders became centralized under the P’yŏngsisŏ (平市署), replacing multiple previous agencies like the Ministry of Taxation (Hojo, 戶曹). This shift signifies not only a reduction in burden but also a transformation in institutional governance. This study pioneers the systematic elucidation of the structure and volume of labor contributions made by guild merchants in late Chosŏn, providing a valuable empirical basis for broader investigations into urban economic obligations and organizational management of the sijŏn system.
