권력과 도시공간의 변화에 대한 연구– 대한제국기~일제강점기 정동을 중심으로

Abstract

Purpose of this study is to investigate process of change and the meaning of urban space mainly with Jeong-dong(貞洞), which was the central space of present downtown Seoul covering the time from Agwanpacheon(俄館播遷 ; Korea royal refuge at the Russian legation) to the period of Korean Empire which had aimed at a modern nation. The period of Korean Empire covered a short history of about 10 years but it exercised a strong effect on urban space of present Seoul. Especially, the modernization project which was rapidly promoted mainly in Jeong-dong was an important historical place in order to realize a modern nation with prosperity and military power in the flow of rapidly changing global culture. Starting from Jeongneung(貞陵) in the beginning of the country, together with an image of place overcoming Imjinwaeran(壬辰倭亂 ; Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592) since Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592, such a sense of place of Jeong-dong has been established as it was arranged as a leased territory in modern times. After the Eulmi incident(乙未事變), the king Gojong(高宗) did Agwanpacheon to the Russian legation and subsequently, urban improvement projects(都市改善事業) started in earnest. Then, an imperial palace Gyeongungung(慶運宮) was built ; Wongudan(圜丘壇), a symbolic space of the Korean Empire, was formed in the vicinity of eastern Gyeongungung ; and, central space of urban space became changed. At the same time, Jeong-dong functioned as central space of Seoul through improvement projects of existing roads according to formation of Taepyeongno(太平路) and Sogongno(小公路) as well as change in road system. However, as the country was forcibly merged to Japan and the subject of power ruling the urban space was changed, achievements of such modernization promotion changed to space different from the original meaning due to overlapping of an intention of colonial power. Taepyeongno which was newly opened in the period of Korean Empire was filled with Japanes symbolic structures along with Project for Reconstructing Divisions of Gyeongseong(京城市區改修事業) while the name of Sogongno was changed into Hasegawacho(長谷川町) ; and a plaza as well as modern structures was built around the road. Wongudan, a symbol of the Korean Empire, was changed into Chosun(朝鮮) Hotel; name of the imperial palace Gyeongungung was changed into Deoksugung(德壽宮) ; its boundary was reduced as its name changed ; and, it disappeared into history.
