Abstract
The purposes of this study is to comprehend the previous studies that the motif in Janghanga was received in The Tale of Genji, and to examine the reception and acculturation of the motif. The focus is on the scenes, where the main characters is separated by death and parting: such as between the emperor Kiritsubo and Kiritsubokoi, Genji and Yugao, Murasakinoue, Kaoru and Oikimi, Ukihune. In The Tale of Genji, the main scenes from Janghanga are as stated below: when Kiritsubokoi died, the emperor Kiritsubo called Hujitsubo, a Kiritsubo look-alike to the palace and let her be next to himself. When Hujitsubo didn't allow Genji to meet her, Genji was attracted by Murasakinoue, a niece of Hujitsubo, resembled his beloved one in appearance. When Oikimi died, Kaoru also fell in love with Ukihune, an Oikimi look-alike. However, the appearance of the lovers' look-alikes is not the motif of Janghanga. Genji was attached to Hujitsubo and took her as his idealistic woman because she resembled his mother very much. He thought of Murasakinoue as a substitute for Hujitsubo. When Kaoru met Ukihune, an Oikimi look-alike, he thought that if someone resembles his beloved one, she would be good enough to be his lover. The tale of Genji and Janghanga had the same motif of yearning for their lovers separated by death or parting. However, in The Tale of Genji, the main characters used to fall in love with a women by the name of Yukari, their dead lovers look-alike. In conclusion, The Tale of Genji not only received the motif from Janghanga but also created a new aspect of relationships in love.
