A Semantic Analysis of “Ochiru” and “Ochiiru” Signifying Downward Movement : From the Point of View of the Tropes in Cognitive Semantics

본고에서는 ‘하향 이동하다’라는 공통 의미를 가지는 유의어인「おちる(ochiru)」와「おちいる(ochiiru)」의 의미와 의미 확장의 양상을 인지의미론의 관점에서 분석하였다. 그리고 선행연구에 대한 의문점-의도성 유무, 이동의 양상, 초점-을 고찰해 보았다. 다의어인「おちる(ochiru)」와「おちいる(ochiiru)」의 복수의 의미는 상호 관련성을 가지며 확장되고, 이는 은유(metaphor, メタファー), 환유(metonymy, メトニミー), 제유(synecdoche, シネクドキー)에 근거한다는 가설을 제시하였다. 예문 분석을 통하여 다의간의 관련성을 설명하고, 의미 확장의 양상을 그림으로 제시하였다. 또한,「おちる(ochiru)」와「おちいる(ochiiru)」의 예문의 비교･분석을 통해 유의어간의 공통점과 차이점을 설명하여, 의미 특징을 보다 명확히 하였다.
Abstract
The present study analyzes from the point of view of cognitive semantics the aspects of the meanings and their extensions of “ochiru” and “ochiiru”, the synonyms which are commonly used to signify “to move downward.” An examination of the questions related to the previous studies―those of the existence of intentionality, the aspects of movement, and profile(focus)―is also included in the study. A hypothesis is suggested that the plural meanings of the polysemic words “ochiru” and “ochiiru” are correlatively extended based on metaphor, metonymy, and synecdoche. The analysis of example sentences is carried out to explain the relationship between the many meanings, and the structure of their polysemy is represented by a diagram. Additionally, the example sentences related to “ochiru” and “ochiiru” are compared and analyzed for the explanation of the similarities and the differences between the two synonyms, which is helpful in clarifying their semantic characteristics.
