초록

The purpose of this study is to examine how seemingly distinct and diverse meanings of down are closely linked to one another in a systematic fashion. In order to reveal that system, the various meanings of down are examined in connection with the cognitive process: conceptualization, metaphor, the device-of-meaning extension, and the principle of prototypicality. The sense of moving from high location to a low location is perceived as a prototypical meaning of down because of the simplest conceptualization as it pertains to the spatio-physical domain. In addition, the prototypical meaning of down gives rise to the vertical sense of down, the slanting sense of down, and the horizontal sense of down, in accordance with the inclination of each path’s degree within the spatial domain. These senses of down trigger metaphorical senses such as ‘downness down’, ‘lessness down’, and ‘lowness down’ in abstract domains. These multiple meanings are constituted on the semantic structure and continuum, describing how one lexical form of down encompasses a number of distinctly different meanings systematically.
