Abstract

In this study, the uses of hedge with respect to the degree of intimacy, betweenfriends or first-meeting people, were investigated by analyzing the conversationsbetween Japanese female university students. The results were summarized as follows. Overall, more kinds of hedge were usedin the conversion between first-meeting people than between friends. Both thenumber of utterances in which hedge used and the average number of hedge perutterance were also higher in the conversion between first-meeting people. The useratio of hedge at sentence-final was higher in the conversation between first-meetingpeople than that between friends. and the tendency of using multiple hedge in autterance was stronger in the conversation between first-meeting people than thatbetween friends. Irrespective of the degree of intimacy, the kinds of hedge used weresimilar, and ’nanka’ was used the most in the conversation between female universitystudents. However, the use ratio of ‘toka’ and ‘janai(ka)’ was relatively higher inthe conversation between friends while that of ‘omou’ was higher betweenfirst-meeting people. These results showed that the kinds of hedge used frequentlyare dependent on the degree of intimacy, which implies that hedge functions as apoliteness strategy, depending on the relationship with interlocutors.
