Abstract

This research is an analysis of the relationships between the male and female protagonists in Makoto Shinkai's animation <Your Name.>(2016) by focusing on “Musubi, the braids of thread(misanga), and Katawaretoki.” As a research method, I analyzed the animation through the context of Japanese traditional culture. First, the word Musubi is interpreted as a symbol of connection and union. The reason is that the term Musubi is used together with braids to symbolize the deep bond and unchanging heart between man and woman in Japanese classical literature. Second, the exchange of the two people's soul by the passage of dreams is proved through concrete and realistic evidence of braids. As the idea of Japanese ancient sorcery "soul knot" they are tied by braids. Third, the stopped taiko drums on the Kagura stage in the dancing scene of the Mitsuha sisters symbolize the irregular flow of time. In addition, the fictitious word "Katawaretoki" in the work can be interpreted as "a half-moon" by referring to the poetic word in Japanese classical literature. It represents the idea that two people can become a complete existence only when they get together. In conclusion, <Your name.> proposes the theme of connection and union between man and woman effectively by using the context of traditional Japanese culture.
