Abstract
Makoto Shinkai’s novel and animation Your Name. uses the meteor strike and the disaster in Itomori as a metaphorical representation of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Through the depiction of the town being destroyed by the meteor, the work indirectly expresses the tragedy of the earthquake and tsunami that claimed countless lives. Your Name. received worldwide acclaim and played an important role in healing those who were hurt by the Great East Japan Earthquake. First, the film embodies the characteristics of the “sekai-kei” genre, where social issues are excluded, and the focus is placed solely on the world between “you and me,” ultimately leading to the salvation of the world. Similarly, Japan's literary tradition of the I-novel, which emphasizes lyrical expressions of personal emotion grounded in realism, also set aside social concerns to deeply explore the self. Within this literary context, Japanese youth naturally accepted and resonated with sekai-kei works that exclude social themes. Second, the work stands out for its imagination and sense of fantasy. The element of time travel between the past and present, along with the fantastical transformation of the story’s setting into a real-world space, breaks down the boundaries between reality and fiction. This fantastical manipulation of time and space serves as a device for overcoming disaster and ultimately leads to a happy ending. Third, the connection between “you and me” leads to solidarity and healing. Through the ribbon Mitsuha gives him, Taki is able to recall his lost memories and find the town where Mitsuha once lived, eventually switching bodies with her three years in the past. Ultimately, their connection results in saving the town. This work portrays the process of overcoming the wounds of disaster and moving toward the future, allowing people to empathize with it while offering hope, comfort, and healing.
