Abstract

Due to the rapid change and development in the Information and Communication Technology of the 21st century, tertiary education seeks to promote a new type of literacy. Apart from the conventional literacy which focuses on understanding single text-oriented media, this new type of literacy requires students to learn new skills to understanding diverse digital media, text, and context. Globalization has accelerated this transition, as acquiring communication skills based on knowledge of diverse language and culture gained more importance. Since promoting literacy skills of tertiary level students is an effective way to develop communication skills needed in the era of diversity and digitalization, this paper aims to present a new Monogatari education method using images inside Monogatari paintings, focusing on the background and concept of Multiliteracies, First, this paper identifies critical literacy through an analysis of Taketori Monogatari and Taketori Monogatari Emaki from the Rikkyo University Library collection. A critical approach helps students to uncover socioeconomic logic symbolized by clothing of the characters. Furthermore, this paper examines how critical literacy approach can help students identify and understand the difference between the social logic in the five suitors and the political logic found in the Tenno, based on the master- vassal relationship discovered in this text. The findings present a new literature education methtod using images of Monogatari paintings, emphasizing the importance of Multiliteracies required for the learners living in an era of diversity.
