본 논문은 미래 대학교양교육이 ‘다중 문해력(Multi-Literacy)’를 지향해야 한다는 점을 주장한다. 다중 문해력의 의의는 다양한 매체들의 등장으로 초래된 의사소통환경의 급격한 변화와 문자 리터러시 교육의 통합적 체계 구축 가능성에 있다. 디지털 전환에 따라 등장한 매체는 새로운 리터러시들을 촉발하였다. 그러나 개별 리터러시의 특성에 대한 강조 속에서 이 리터러시들은 리터러시 본연의 의미와 역할보다는 매체 특성에 부합하는 기능이 강조되었다. 이에 새로운 리터러시 교육은 매체 활용을 위한 기술 교육을 중심으로 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 리터러시는 인간의 세계를 읽고 이해하고 이루는 정신적 활동이며, 매체 역시 이러한 활동 내에 있는 것이다. 따라서 모든 리터러시는 이와 같은 리터러시 본연의 의미와 역할 속에서 이해되어야 하며, 리터러시 교육 역시 이러한 이해에 기초해야 한다. 이를 위해 문자 리터러시의 위상은 새롭게 조명되어야 한다. 그것은 리터러시 본연의 의미를 가장 오랫동안 보존해 왔으며, 병렬적 리터러시들의 융합 토대일 수밖에 없다는 것이 필자의 결론이다. 따라서 문자 리터러시에게 미래 리터러시 교육의 체계성 구축에 있어 그 기초적 역할이 주어져야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper suggests that the future liberal arts education should pursue the 'Multi-Literacy.' The meaning of the 'Multi-Literacy' lies in overcoming the dispersibility of Multiliteracies and obtaining the possibility of a consolidated literacy education system. The media appearing along with the Digital Transformation flow have caused new literacies. Now we have a lot of literacies. We usually stress the function of each media related to each literacy than the original meaning of literacy. As the result, our education of the new literacies concentrates on functional and technical education. But literacy is a spiritual activity that reads, understands, and constructs the human world. And all acts with media also is contained in that activity. Thus we have to understand all literacies in that meaning and role and the literacy education also has to base on that understanding. To establish future literacy education on that base, we have to be newly aware of the value and status of literal literacy. It has preserved the original meaning of literacy for the longest time, and, through this meaning, we can understand various literacies as a consolidated whole. In this sense, literal literacy should be a central role in constructing a new future literacy education system.
