Abstract

In this paper, the relationship between “Japanese-language ability” and “Classical Chinese ability” in Japan is examined, while comparing it with Classical Chinese education in Korea. The term “Japanese-language ability” does not mean the ability to read or write kana or kanji, but refers to the ability to apply kanji or Chinese characters to daily life—that is, the ability to use kanji as one’s own. It can be said that “Classical Chinese ability” is a very important factor, because it is necessary to have the ability to read Classical Chinese that forms the framework of modern Japanese writing. On the other hand, Classical Chinese education in Korea has been officially taught in secondary education since 1972, but the number of Classical Chinese teachers and classes has decreased in recent years. Unlike Japan, interest in Classical Chinese education in Korea is decreasing year by year, as Hangul has become the mainstream in contemporary Korean writing. Classical Chinese education providers also have an original goal of understanding their predecessors or Classical Chinese culture through Classical Chinese learning, but they are required to teach Classical Chinese and Classical Chinese poetry while simultaneously teaching Chinese characters and vocabulary. Even though there is a difference between Japan, which uses Chinese characters as a national script, and Korea, which uses Hangul as a national script, the importance of “Classical Chinese” in Japan becomes clearer when compared to Classical Chinese education in Korea.
