Abstract

This article surveys the current global directions of the education of Chinese characters and literature with several cases including China, Japan and the United States, and suggests the role of Korea. The policies of the education of Chinese characters and literature in East Asia countries in modern period will be summarized and also the curricula and textbooks, dictionaries of each countries concerned including China, Japan, Taiwan, South and North Korea and the United States will be and also surveyed. It is at the moment estimated that the education of Chinese characters and literature in East Asia countries is in decrease in spite of their constant political efforts in each countries. It is needed to reconsider whether the current education of Chinese characters and literature in Korea reflects the true picture of Sino-Korean literature and its traditional methodologies. At last this article suggests the several henceforth tasks: (1) the examination of historical reality of the spheres of Sino-Korean literature, (2) the efforts to keep up with the global trend of classical studies, (3) the dissemination of the education of Chinese characters and literature for the diffusion of Korean studies, (4) the aggressive strategies to meet the academic requests from the countries abroad.
