Abstract
This study analyzes the ukiyo-e print series Tōkaidō Gojūsantsugi from the late Edo period to examine how spatial experience and mobility were visualized. By exploring the context of its production and distribution, the research reveals how the spread of travel culture and the development of infrastructure influenced the creation of the series. Through detailed analysis of individual prints, it clarifies how sensory elements and temporality shaped the depictions of landscapes and how various social practices during travel endowed places with meaning. Particular attention is paid to the representation of human figures, showing interactions between travelers and locals, religious practices and leisure, and scenes of commercial activity. The study demonstrates that Tōkaidō Gojūsantsugi was not merely a depiction of scenery, but a complex visualization of mobility and the symbolic nature of space in late Edo society. Ultimately, this research reinterprets the moving landscapes of Edo Japan as fluid spaces interwoven with sensation, practice, and social relations, proposing a new approach that integrates visual culture and spatial theory.
